High numbers of disabled people unemployed

There are a number of reasons that New York companies might want to hire disabled individuals other than avoiding discrimination lawsuits. Considering disabled individuals for positions means a greater focus on hiring the best person for the job. Employee retention may also improve in an inclusive environment. Conversely, when employees suspect discrimination, they may be less likely to trust management.

Nearly 27,000 charges of disability discrimination were filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2015, and they were almost one-third of the total discrimination charges filed with the agency that year. Furthermore, disability discrimination claims are on the rise. This may in part be due to changes in laws and regulations and an increased willingness on the part of disabled people to fight discrimination by filing claims. Disability advocates are also making an effort to keep employees more informed of their rights.

Disabled people are disproportionately out of work compared to people who do not have disabilities. Only 17.5 percent of people with disabilities were employed in 2015 compared to 65 percent of people without disabilities. In part, this may be due to the fact that people are not required to report disabilities that do not affect their job. Furthermore, some jobs may be unable to make reasonable accommodations. However, even accounting for these figures, the number of unemployed disabled people is high.

People who believed they are facing disability discrimination at work might want to discuss the issue with an attorney. In some cases, it may be possible to resolve the issue in the workplace, but they may want to have a solid understanding of their legal standing first.
