Providing assistance for diverse writers facing harassment

Texas residents may be interested in learning about the challenges some diverse writers are facing when writing for television. According to one study, 64 percent of diverse writers say that they had experienced some type of bias, discrimination, or harassment in the workplace. Fifty-eight percent said that they have experienced micro-aggression when in the writing room. The same number of individuals experienced push back when they would pitch stories with diverse characters in non-stereotypical roles.

These reports suggest that steps may need to be taken to address harassment and discrimination among diverse television writers. There may be the need for improved representation and improved treatment among of some diverse writers. Many are looking at policies that could be put in place to achieve these goals. Part of it could involve collecting data, including tracking and reviewing inclusion and equity data for writing submissions.

Education and mentoring will likely play a big role in helping diverse writers who show potential to take the necessary steps to take on more responsibility within the organization. Additional training could be given to help all identify forms of discrimination and harassment that affect diverse writers in order to minimize this type of harassment.

Programs could be in place to incentivize organizations to promote diverse writers while at the same time sanctioning programs or upper-level writers who abuse said programs. Prominent individuals in the writing guilds and other powerful industry players will need to do their part to fight against discrimination, harassment, and bias against diverse writers.

If an employee feels that they are being discriminated against because of their race, their religion, their sexual orientation, their age, or other similar reasons, they may want to speak to an attorney who specializes in employment law. An attorney might be able to advise clients on things like pleading requirements, what issues to look for during discovery, and how to use expert witnesses with the goal of helping their clients receive the best outcomes.
