TBS faces racial discrimination lawsuit

New York cable television viewers may be interested in learning that a lawsuit has been filed against TBS by an African-American former employee claiming the channel practices racial discrimination. According to the woman's lawsuit, she worked at the company for 13 years and observed a pattern of racial discrimination. She says that African-American employees had to work harder for promotions than white employees and that they were paid less than their white counterparts.

The woman also says that she experienced racial discrimination personally. She was a quality control manager and says that a white man with fewer qualifications was promoted ahead of her. She also says that the positions of senior vice president and above have never been held by a nonwhite employee.

According to the woman, African-American employees are kept in positions where they have less power and that are less connected to revenue generation. She may file a class action lawsuit on behalf of her fellow employees against CNN, TBS and Time Warner.

Discrimination against employees on the basis of race, religion, national origin and other factors is prohibited by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. People are also protected against discrimination on the basis of factors such as disability, pregnancy, and being 40 or older. People who are facing employment discrimination might want to talk to an attorney about whether they are a protected class, whether incidents at work constitute discrimination or harassment, and what steps they can legally take in response. Even workplaces that have policies addressing discrimination may not satisfactorily investigate and resolve the situation when an employee reports it. If this happens, the employee may want to file a claim with the EEOC or a lawsuit against the company.
